PRODUCING some of the best baked goods in Australia is not a pie in the sky dream for one of the region’s bakeries.

Country Cob Bakery in Kyneton won awards for best gourmet pie and best plain mince beef pie at the 2017 Australia’s Best Pie Competition last week, which attracted entries from 388 bakeries across the country.

The award for best gourmet pie was bestowed on the bakery for its chilli con carne pie.

“Put a lot of love in there,” bakery owner and head pastry chef Chan Khun said when asked for his secret to a top pie.

He said the judges’ feedback revealed they liked the juicy, not-too-fine mince and the pastry.

The bakery has stood in Kyneton for many years, but Mr Khun took over the business just a little over a year ago.

He had been in the industry for about a decade, but said this year there had been a concerted effort to improve.

As well as its category-winning pies, the bakery also took home gold medals for its chicken, ham and leek pie and its Thai curry beef pie at the Baking Association of Australia-run competition.

Silver medals were awarded for its meat pastie, vegetarian pastie, chunky beef pie, butter chicken pie, garlic prawn pie and sweet chilli prawn pie.

Mr Khun and his team are no strangers to success: earlier this year the bakery won awards for its white bread loaf and Thai curry pie at the Victorian Baking Show.

The bakery has also been recognised for its vanilla slice.

Hey! We’ve got about 388 Suspended coffee’s available at the moment. It’s gone quiet..what’s happening people? I believe Monsieur Pierre have a bucket load available too! I’m told The Pizza and Wine Club might have some too. Spread the word y’all and let’s get them out there! They are no good to any of the businesses just sitting there. Do you know of someone who could use a few? Any social workers out there want to take a pile of cards to hand around? I’ll go and hand some out to the op shops this week and if anyone has any ideas of how we can spread them among the   community please let us know…

How much fun was our Pie Eating Competition last Saturday?! We had a ball! Congrats to our Champion CFA member on gutsing 7 pies in 30 minutes! Big effort! That’s 1.6kg of pie meat and pastry…. and no bucket needed! With the support of our contstants sponsors and generous donaters we raised just over $2000 for the Romsey Play Connect and Macedon Ranges Autism Support Network! Well done to all involved, awesome work!

Have you heard the latest news?

The ‘Suspended Coffee’ idea has been around for years overseas and is now taking off here in Australia, and we are proud to be a supporter! In fact at this stage, I think we are the only cafe in the Macedon Ranges area! It’s been all over the media like a hot rash! Ten news aired a story last night, the age and social media are getting behind this also with stories advertising cafe owners showing their support!

The idea of suspending coffee reminds me a little of the Apple iCloud- Pay for a suspended coffee, the coffee goes into the iCloud and when those less fortunate are in need of a hot beverage, we are able to pull it down from the iCloud and offer them the suspended coffee, bought and paid for by a total stranger.

We urge you to all get on board and support this. Perhaps next time you can spare a few bucks, put it towards a suspended coffee. Just a little human kindness can make a big difference in somebody else’s life.

April is Autism Awareness Month and to celebrate, raise funds and awareness we will be hosting a ‘Pie Eating Competition’ here at the shop on April 20th 2013 @ 10.30am. We are looking for members of our local community to participate as entrants and seek donations and/or sponsorship per pie consumed,  in order to raise money for the Romsey Play Connect-Supporting local families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. If you or someone you know may be interested, please let us know either at the shop, via the website or at our facebook page. Booklets for entrants are available at the bakery.

Think about asking your football coach, teacher, local police or CFA to stuff their faces for an excellent cause!

Also in April, we will be “LIGHTING IT UP BLUE” at the Country Cob Bakery for the entire month. Watch us turn the shop front blue in an attempt to raise awareness for Autism within our community. Pop in and buy a wrist band or pin and support AMAZE (formerly, Autism Victoria).

Enjoy coffee, look super stylish and save the planet all at the same time!

Did you know that KeepCup users have diverted an estimated 30,000 tonnes of disposable cup waste from landfill! Amazing!

Like Dr. Seuss said, “Unless someone like you, cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better-it’s not”

When next in Kyneton, why not try our award winning Chicken, Ham & Leek Pies? The Baking Association of Australia thought they were just delicious and awarded us 3rd prize in a recent judging!
